Retrospective tax amendments, delay in retail FDI made investors think twice about India: Supachai Panitchpakdi

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad) today said the Indian government's move to amend the Income Tax Act, 1961, with retrospective effect announced last year had shaken investors' confidence on entering India.
Supachai Panitchpakdi, its secretary-general, in an interaction with Nayanima Basu on the sidelines of an event organised by the Aspen Institute, also said the government's delay in allowing foreign direct investment (FDI) in the retail sector led to policy unpredictability. Edited excerpts

Government mulling club of nations to promote exchange of solar technology, says Union minister Farooq Abdullah

New Delhi: India is looking forward to establishing a club of nations blessed with sufficient sunlight and harness energy to promote solar power as a substitute to the conventional form of energy, Union minister Farooq Abdullah said in New Delhi on Monday.
Addressing an energy conference organised by the ASPEN Institute, the Minister of New and Renewable Energy also said his ministry is planning to add another 1300 megawatt worth of solar energy projects to the Jawaharlal Nehru Solar Mission by the end of this year. "We intend to -very shortly- create a club. A club of countries that god has given maximum sun and start thinking how we help each other in trying to get solar energy," he said.

Deputy chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia today said that the tax imbroglio concerning British telecom major Vodafone Plc is under serious discussion and there could be a solution soon.
“I am aware of the situation (on Vodafone). There are discussions going on the issue, which I am not privy to but I hope there will solution to it soon,” Ahluwalia told here today while addressing ‘The Growth Net’ seminar organised by the Aspen Institute.

The chances of India and China going to a war are "very very little" as 8,000 years of statecraft is good enough to take care of that problem, National Security Advisor (NSA) Shivshankar Menon said here today.
"I think very very very little. I assume 8,000 years of statecraft is good enough to take care of that problem," he said while replying to a question at a security conference organised by the ASPEN Institute here.

Two leading think tanks have joined hands to launch a forum for businesses in emerging economies to help identify new opportunities and forge new relationships to address common challenges.
The Growth Net, a joint initiative of The Aspen Institute India and strategic advisory firm Smadja & Smadja, is set to be launched at a conference on Sunday by External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid.
"Growth Net's focus is on key challenges including national security, finance, clean energy, trade, investment, consumers, skills and talent," said Gautam Thapar, chairman of Aspen Institute India.

It is not always essential to be first to be innovative, according to R. Gopalakrishnan, Director of Tata Sons. Delivering the first C K Prahalad Memorial lecture on “Innovation Culture: Myths, Reality Ideas”, he said that innovations such as electronic voting machines (which, he said, even countries such as the U.S. did not have) proved that ``making good your resources and the right mindset is what creates innovation’’. The lecture was presented by the Aspen Institute India, which promotes value-based leadership and open dialogue through cross-sector outreach. Management guru, teacher, thinker and visionary C K Prahalad was passionate in his belief of India’s inherent potential. Late Prahalad held the belief that innovation should focus on those at the bottom of the pyramid.

Tax haven tag by India riles Singapore's prime minister

NEW DELHI: Prime minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong, said on Thursday that India has conceded that it should not have described the city state as a "tax haven" in its "white paper on black money".
According to the visiting leader, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh acknowledged so when presented with a high-level protest from Lee, who said that they were "disturbed" to see themselves in the government report.

Singapore will help India in setting up a world-class skill development centre, imparting vocational education, in the national capital region.
